Well, I'm not sure I agree about losing momentum. KDE 4 certainly won't be hitting everyone's desktop the moment of release, it'll take a bit for packages to be made, vetted, and installed. Many more will not even try it until its in the newest release from <insert_favorite_distribution>. Add to that the hope that there will be this surge of desire to create fun plasmoids, new cool effects to take advantage of kwin's compositing capabilities, etc. Of course, there are also other applications not on the KDE release schedule which will ship roughly around the same time as KDE, or atleast this is what is intended, and that will keep KDE discussions rolling imho.
