IR2 has some 16-bit luminance support as a special case.  It might also
support 16-bit alpha in corresponding special cases; unfortunately, I
haven't seen the specs in four years and I don't remember the details.
12 bits is enough for all but the most demanding uses (e.g. compositing
many layers before transferring the result to high-dynamic-range film).
