FreeType 2 should match FreeType 1 essentiall pixel-for-pixel; certainly the quality I've seen with FreeType 2 rasterizer (given high quality fonts) is at least as good as anything I've seen elsewhere. It sounds like you've still got something misconfigured or miscompiled.
