It sounds like your monitor has a low gamma... on most people's monitors, the gamma corrected versions should appear *more* consistent in stem width. (But they may appear less attractive in other ways ... mainly being too light.) If you do a web search you should be able to find some gamma test patterns; you can then play around with 'xgamma' until you have a gamma of 2.2 and see if the screenshots look better.
