I've done it before, and yes, it works. As you noted, you won't get a
perfect match as the harness is still short so the impedance transformation
in the matching sections isn't exactly right, but it's close. As long as
you're not adding a lot of length, the "whisker" method, as you call it,
works fine. There won't be any pattern distortion.
You can probably pick up an additional fraction of a dB by re-spacing the
elements. Just scale the spacing proportionally (e.g. increase the spacing
between elements by about 6% or whatever the harness will allow).
