One wavelength, so for 2M, approx 6ft, although anything over abt 4 1/2' 
  will do OK.

Guess it depends- are these single or multiple dipoles? A 4-bay dipole 
will work as good, and in some ways better, than an end-fed vertical.
If what you have is just one dipole, than you'll get some gain with a 
'vertical'.
