It works on 6 meters because your antenna noise temperature is much higher 
than the noise temperature of the pad/preamp combination.  If you need a 
preamp on a 6 meter receiver though, I would think the receiver must be a 
little deaf.

That method can never yield good performance at UHF, where antenna noise 
temperatures are much closer to ambient (295 K).
