Tom,

If your repeater has an ideal antenna, a low-loss duplexer, and a really
low-loss feedline, you probably don't need a preamp.  Sometimes, a
preamp can magnify reception problems rather than reduce them.

I have used Angle Linear preamps with great results, but I have been
careful to use bandpass cavities to restrict the spectrum that the
preamp sees.  As Chip Angle will tell you, you cannot simply install a
preamp without doing the design engineering first.  In other words, an
RF preamp is not something that you can install on a whim, without
considering the many consequences that may ensue!  Caveat Emptor...
