Shielding was much more of an issue with those than it is with newer 
controllers. Make sure the board is screwed down into the cabinet, and 
the lid is on and has a decent path to the chassis. Also individual 
leads need individual shields. Audio path shields need to go to analog 
ground, and other leads need to go to digital ground-and they cannot be 
connected together at the connector on the back of the controller!
(Although, non-audio leads are not as critical to be shielded.)
