GMRS repeaters in the Phila.. PA area. They even got a contractor for no
license. They even got a group in the Camden NJ area for no license and it was a
non profit group running a fund-raiser with all HT's. So yes they are working on
it. They busted me for running a Master two on GMRS. It had been on for a while
and on a part 17 tower inspection on a matter not connected to me they saw the
unit while check all units in the tower. As for using outer things I had two
master two's and one Micor and I have replaced them all with 3 Kenwood TKR-850
repeaters. You can run any thing you would like BUT it can be costly. The outer
thing is they found a few 100 watt units (50 watts Max on GMRS repeaters) and
some mobiles used as repeaters and it is not a good thing. They are nice about
it. But! I found in my case it was better and cheaper to replace the units then
keep them on a pay a fine.

Then how is it I see them and lots of
other GE, Midland etc stuff in use as GMRS stuff. I guess there is no
self policing of these frequencies like there is in Amateur. I bet if
there was that the 5 and 8 mile radios on sale at Wal-Mart (junk compared to a
good Kenwood 349E BTW) would be protested by legally licensed GMRS
operators. I saw how Wal-Mart and the manufactures get around this
though by including a mice type version of the GMRS application inside folded
up in the part you toss.
Has there ever been a "Pirate" GMRS
repeater shut down? GMRS is new to me and I'm wondering if it's just a
freeband whose only requirement is $80 to the FCC and then that is optional if
no one complains.
I notice there are only 2 GMRS
repeaters here in my area. No one seems to use them at
all.

If you're
talking about the TK349's appearing on Ebay and Overstock.com, No they are
not type accepted (certified) for use in the US. Just look at the label and
you will see something like "certified for the UK". These radios can only be
used legally on the ham bands in the US, not for commercial purposes, no
GMRS either. Same for
TK709 and TK809.
