Actually many of us do, nearly everyone using commercial gear. I just 
purchased a brand new model Kenwood TK-3180 (first sold new in 
August-04, definitely making it a 21st century radio).  VERY nice 
radio, but only has a 12-button pad, as do most commercial rigs. At 
least on the 3180 you *can* twisty-knob your way to the optional four 
keys, but not very conveniently. How many buttons are on an HT1250 or 
1550?  ...and how many Amateur rigs are made that cover 900 MHz?

If you can't do it in twelve keys... it's not worth doing, IMO.
