The 567 makes a reliable tone decoder... but (there's 
always a "but") the dectection bandwidth is really 
kind of wide.  Unless you're really good with the 
spec sheets in your design... your circuit will detect 
the ctcss tones on each side of the selected frequency. 

If you're on a budget... you can also use the same 
decoder (at the same time) for the encoder side if 
you know how to "tap" the pll.  

Yaesu used the 567 as the ctcss decoder in at least 
one of their ham radios.  Something like the Comm 
Spec units are much better.

You're lucky to have had the 567 back in high school. 
Harken back to my days of trouble to the classic 
88mH telephone toroids and ge transistors for the 
cutting edge.
