Neil, Good question, you are not really modifying the transmitter or receiver at all, just removing the diode antenna switch, making the receiver hot all the time and separating the RX and TX with coaxes. I have a couple of these little repeaters on Ham frequencies, they work great. I used one a couple years ago at the Dayton Hamvention on 444.850, un-coordinated of course. That one is the 5 watt version, it would not quite make it throughout the building so I am thinking about modifying one of the 25 watt radios to get a little more penetration.
