I've had at least two people I highly respect for their RF knowledge
tell me offline that Z-matchers are "just another place to generate IM".
And of course, according to another highly-respected local ham,
"Intermod is the devil's snack food." (Damn skippy, it is!)
We currently have a local discussion going on about putting a Z-matcher
on a system we've been blowing PA's on, and would love to see the RF
gurus (and clueless noobs too! heh) discuss.
The system already has a four-port VHF combiner on it, meaning there's
at least four stages of isolator (if they're dual-stage, which I believe
they are) with 50 ohm loads hanging off them on the inbound side...
(Nothing is getting in through THAT that's unwanted!)
And of course, going out... everything should see a 50-ohm load, even if
the bloody antenna were to fall off the tower. (Of course, those loads
probably wouldn't survive that for long... but anyway... the antenna's
working, or none of the repeaters would be happy up there.)
So... you all remember Mike Myers and "Coffee Talk" on Saturday Night
Live...
Talk amongst yourselves. I'm feeling a little verklempt.
Here, I'll give you a topic:
"Repeaters with Isolators and Z-Matchers: Since an Isolator should
always present a 50-ohm load to the PA, why would I ever want a
Z-matcher in there?"
