Charlie, The radio tech is correct. I assume your radios are CDM1550-LS+, where the "+" indicates UHF band. The CDM radios cannot be modified for out-of-band operation. In addition to physical (component) differences between the R1 and R2 radios, the CPUs are mask-programmed with band information that is checked by both the firmware and the CPS programming software. Since the band information is hardwired into the radio, there's nothing that can be hacked in the CPS to make the radio think otherwise. Even if that were possible, the radio would not function efficiently out of band, if at all. Your best bet is to unload the R2 radios and buy R1 radios.
