Luckily, no crystals required. If you had one of the older analog stations, with the EPROM that contained the station's parameters, you might not be so enthusiastic. The software-programmed model is far easier and more desirable because you CAN play with it.
Depending on your budget and interest, I'd suggest you go buy the RSS package. It was only $75 a few years ago. You do have to sign a comprehensive license agreement, but so what. You get a nice manual with the old software. You'll have to make/buy a programming cable and a RIB if you don't already have those. Lots of info available on repeater-builder and other web sites.
