The MSF5000 RSS is rather old. It will not start up under WinXP, although it might run under an older version.
Like a lot of 1980/1990 Motorola DOS programs, it prints directly to the printer port. It expects a parallel printer - dot matrix, laser, inkjet, etc - that accepts character I/O. A lot of the modern inexpensive printers are Windows-only because the print data is converted to individual bits (by a huge driver in the host computer) which are sent to the printer. All of the intelligence is in the host computer running Windows. This type of printer usually will NOT work under DOS, and most certainly not from an older RSS package. Unfortunately, the printing capabilities of RSS are limited to sending the codeplug to a locally attached printer. You can't even divert the output to a disk file. If so, you could save the output and print it from within Windows. But Nooooooooo, that would be too easy. You have to go back to around 1992 when the software was written, and remember what kinds of computers and peripherals were in use. Then you need to set up a system just like that to enjoy all the features available in this particular RSS package. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. You probably aren't doing anything wrong except expecting stuff to work. Nothing unreasonable about that, right? If you want, send me the codeplug, I'll print it, scan the pages, and send you the resulting files which you can then print under Windows. At least it's a way to see stuff, and it is quite useful to have.
