I would expect that even an older version would still read the radio and just come up with a "model not found" error if it was too old.
Did this radio EVER get programmed properly at your house? The programming line doesn't go too far into the radio. You could try grounding the programming line, then turn the radio on and see if it goes into test mode. That might verify the integrity of the programming line. You should also measure +5V on it when the radio is on with no RIB attached. MIC jacks have been known to get dirty contacts, or even break, so it's worth checking the line all the way through the system, from the programming cable's RJ45 plug to the MIC jack, thru the control head, and eventually to the microprocessor on the main board.
