Thanks for all the replies.  We checked for desense before a while
back,  If I remember correctly it wasn't a problem.  But... It could
also be an antenna location problem  It is in a tree with the antenna
sitting up among the upper most branches. I've seen some discussions
that say this wouldn't be a big problem though I myself have wondered
if the branches are causing some type of desense problem. 
Here is the set-up:
2 maxon radios, ts-64 decoder as controller (thinking a better
controller might help), flat pack duplexer, unknown interconnect
cables (provided by dealer), Tram 1485 base antenna, and RG-8 cable to
the antenna (I know this is not the best choice for uhf but it fit the
budget). 2 deep cycle batteries and way under powered solar panels.
Thanks again for all the suggestions. We will be trying some of these
suggestions over the next couple days.
