15 kc. is definitely excessive. Did you mean 5 kc.? 1200 bps packet should be limited to 3.0-3.5 kc. deviation. The transmitted bandwidth ends up being near the bandwidth of nominal 5 kc. deviation voice because the data creates more FM sidebands. That doesn't mean turn down the deviation control on your transmitter. It means reduce the audio level going into the transmitter from the TNC. This keeps the deviation limiter/clipper in the transmitter audio circuit from affecting the audio. Laryn K8TVZ
