Seems a lot of people are having difficulties with
their stations not accepting code plugs after the
firmware has been upgraded to the latest and greatest
version.

I called Motorola this afternoon and spoke to the only
person left who actually knows how to spell MSF. I
explained the problem of the version mismatch (trying
to write a version 5 code plug into a just-upgraded
station that reports as version 4). He had these two
suggestions:

1. Start with a fresh code plug made from CONV.DEF,
rather than CONV_3.DEF. Both are supplied with RSS and
CONV.DEF is normally used for older System Versions (1
& 2). After configuring the code plug, write it to the
station. You should get a message about a version
mismatch, and RSS will automatically convert the code
plug to System Version 3, which is for the version 5
firmware that's currently being distributed by
Motorola. This should go in without any problems and
you should be all set.

2. Make absolutely sure you're running RSS on a
computer that's been booted to real MS-DOS. If you
used a mouse to start it, you're NOT running DOS. On
some Windows systems, you can press F8 during the
start-up process and it will boot to MS-DOS. Another
way is to boot MS-DOS from a floppy disk. You will
know that you've got MS-DOS running because there will
be white text on a black background and you'll get the
A:\ or C:\ prompt on your screen.

You WILL get errors, usually writing the code plug, if
Windows is running in any way, shape, or form.

Computer speed does not seem to be an issue with this
product's RSS. It communicates with the station at a
blazing 1200 baud. I've had no troubles with a 6 year
old Dell laptop running at 850 MHz. I've got my hard
drive formatted as FAT32 and I start the computer from
a Win98 boot floppy which supports FAT32.

While I haven't personally experienced this version
problem, other people have. If this information helps
someone who's stuck in this causality loop, please let
me know. If things still don't go right, please let me
know so I can try to get additional help from
Motorola.
