This is how the ICOM repeater controllers and repeaters work. They do not put out the typical ptt, rx/tx audio, cos, etc...both the controller and repeaters put out a serial data stream talking to one other with a cat-5 cable. Embedded in this data is the typical I/O commands. This essentially locks one to ICOMs equipment.

If one decoded this info and converted to typical I/O then one could use better RF gear like a MSR2000 with the ICOM controller. The ICOM controller does offer some added features such as connection to the gate way which so many in D-Star is wanting. I see the gate way as a very useful tool.
