I do repeater linking thru the internet, running W2K with Symantec A/V and
behind a hardware based firewall.  I have had no problem in 6 years.  About
twice a year the computer needs to be re-booted, which is done by entering a
code to the linkcomm controller that cuts AC power for about 20 seconds.
