You probably saw a Vocaline Company of America, JRC-400, Citizens Radio Class B transceiver. These were made many years ago in Old Saybrook, Ct close to where I now live. A couple of hams in this area used to work there. They were an AM modulation oscillator (with some FM too) and a regenerative receiver. I had a set back in the '60s that I think I put on the ham band. I'm really not sure of what frequency I tuned them to because I was using a device called "Leecher wires" to determine the frequency. Anyway, if I was illegal I didn't transmit very far. These only had a range of 1/4 mile with the whip on the top of the radio. Vocaline also made a few for the ham bands, but they are very rare.
