Early tube-type?repeaters?used large relays?to key the transmitter. When someone keyed and unkeyed the repeater the result really was a loud?"kerchunk" at the site. It led to what we now call "courtesy delays" -- the idea being if there was another transmission soon after the first the transmitter would not have to drop and pick up again.
