Hello Jeff, Yes , I've tried to feed the signal from my external reference oscillator into the 1200, but it takes literately volts of signal to get it to switch to the external osc. input.
Actually, the 1200 with the bad oscillator was a donor for my 1500 that originally had the bad oscillator. The 1200 and the 1500 use the same unit. I swapped them out and fixed the 1500. The bad 1200 is now my spare, I've got a 1200S too. I was thinking of using the bad 1200 on the bench, maybe removing the internal oscillator and just using the external osc input, but never got around to it yet.
