I wouldn't do that. FIRST-unplug the encoder audio out lead and see if it's still there (maybe the voltage in lead too, then ground). Then check levels. It should be between 500 and 800 Hz deviation. Then look for a good clean sine wave. Com-Spec SS-32's and TS-32's are known to have a less than perfect sine wave and can sound a bit raspy sometimes. If all that is OK, the problem is on the receiving end.
