Sound advice! I have two PS. An Astron RS-70M and a Limiting unit, a Tenma 72-420. Gets just about every job done that I need!

Use a PS that has some sort of current limiting, like an Astron VS-xx. Throttle the current limit back quite a ways, then clip the negative to the CHASSIS of the radio. Touch the positive to different pins on hte connector. If you touch the hot to the ground lead on the connector, the current limit will kick in. But it will be impossible to reverse polarity the radio that way. Shorting the PS to ground is the worst that can happen.
