That's sad story, but there're different ones, too. For example,
several years ago, X charged Y with copyright violation, etc.

That's great misunderstanding how a "reverse engineering for making
open" project works. *Of course* the whole RE process is to understand
how the hardware (driven by firmware) works and to make open firmware
from scratch. Nobody is even thinking about using godawful vendor
firmware in their free products - why start all that effort in first
place otherwise.
