Robin,
Did you just update to Mac OS 9? Anyone doing backups to removable disks
with Retrospect or Retrospect Express under Mac OS 9 _MUST_ update to
Retrospect 4.2 or Retrospect Express 4.1E (respectively) for best
compatibility.
These updates are available at

(Users with versions of Retrospect proper older than 4.1 must purchase the
upgrade to 4.2. Contact our Customer Service Department at
