Thanks, but STP is disabled, and the problem still occurs even when I set up retrospect on an old PPC 601.

I firmly believe its an incompatibility between protocols retrospect uses and the HP 2424m
HP have been helpful in supplying information about their switch which supports
IEEE 802.1q, 802.1p, 802.1d, 802.3x

I wrote to Dantz weeks ago but have not even had a reply!
