Answering my own question: the build system's openssl is coming along for the 
ride as it is copied into the archive. That's probably OK as I think by 
building against a system with a very old glibc, we'll be able to keep using 
these libraries even when on a system with a new glibc. Have you tested an 
extreme example, like building on el6.6 and running on Ubuntu 18?

By the way, why not statically link all the Kudu dependencies? Wouldn't that 
make for a simpler archive (i.e. less moving parts)?
