Hey just a heads up - I've submitted a smaller one-line fix for the
original issue as part of #488 - that's just because I want to pull it into a
release candidate.

In general this part of the code definitely could use some broader
clean-up, so let's keep going with this patch...
The change to be logging would be good to remove, that's a widely used
interface in Spark that's been stable for a long time, and it's been kept
intentionally consistent with standard logger interfaces in case we want to
change around the logging in spark.
