This is a similar issue: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SPARK-29274 IIUC, you mean that: If ansi.enabled is false, the result of findCommonTypeForBinaryComparison is DoubleType. Otherwise, throw an exception or add a parameter to control whether enable compare string and numeric type for ANSI mode. @wangyum
