What does running spark-shell have to do with launching the history server
without doing kinit?

history server is a standalone process that simply reads from HDFS and
then displays that information back to the user. In order to test that you
just start history server without kinit and see if you can view the already
existing application logs. Or look in the history server logs to see what its
reading.

Running spark-shell with and without running kinit has nothing to do with
history server itself.
