    I don't believe that it is generally safe to catch `OutOfMemoryError` as 
the JVM is in an undefined state after this error has occurred (It is called a 
fatal error for a reason).  For example, some of Spark's other threads or 
actors could have also received the exception and died.  As a result I think we 
should close this issue in favor of a solution like 
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SPARK-4476.  Note that until then you can 
manually specify a schema that includes a MapType.
