   This looks reasonable to me, my only concern is if someone has a script 
that's been using the default behaviour of `k` already and this change could 
result in an unpleasant surprise (e.g. job failure). Do we think folks have not 
been using the current default behaviour? Would a better default be to throw an 
explicit exception if there are no units?
