Your explanation for why the previous code worked is correct. It's just
doing extra communication.
I just noticed a few things when opening up this PR in IntelliJ (yay error
highlighting). That really should be it, though.
I'm running a speed test to see if I can tell a difference between this and
the previous code. I'll post again later today.
