@holdenk, as I said earlier, I opened this PR to discuss the revert. In fact your PR was not reviewed by the original author or reviewer, neither was approved by any commiter. The reason of the change was not explained either in the PR description. Other people also raised a concern. spark_sesison is reserved catalog name for the default Spark session catalog. I don't think it makes much sense to allow it as an external catalog. Can we instead document that this is disallowed as an external catalog name? It does look odd to override the default catalog name.
