    @rxin It supports writing a UTF8 encoding byte array, but there doesn't 
seem to be equivalent support for reads.. best that can be done is converting 
the current `char[]` buffer and offset/length directly to a `byte[]`, avoiding 
an alloc/copy to `String`.
