Review Comment:
   Meanwhile, what "safety" issue are we even responding to here? Right now, 
the behavior of a file-constant metadata column is perfectly predictable (and 
consistent with its behavior before this PR) -- _unless_ the user opts in to 
using an extractor by overriding the method to provide an extractor for the 
column.
