Regarding backporting, it could be enough to start with copying
{{SparkFunSuite}} into 1.3 & 1.4 branches, so that any new patches written
against trunk can be applied to those branches without any rewrites being
needed. You wouldn't need to patch the existing tests for that, just have new
tests switch to it even in the older branches
