On closer investigation, this bug doesn't seem to directly affect Spark
1.3+.
Also, SPARK-8086 appears to be a false alarm due to some issues in test
code. I'd still like to follow up with some documentation and cleanup in this
code, but it's a much lower priority since I no longer think that there's a bug
here.
