The high-level motivation for this change looks good to me. One thing that
you might look into is whether this patch has removed the last uses of
`CatalystTypeConverters.convertToCatalyst`; if so, I think we should go a
little further and just remove that method from `CatalystTypeConverters` so
that people don't attempt to use that slower path in new code. If it's still
used in places that are hard to change, though, then it's fine to leave it.
