On another note, mapToPair, flatMapToPair, mapPartitionsToPair, and untyped fromJavaRDD(rdd) still use fakeClassTag, so byte[] keys created that way still skip the guard. Should we follow up with a separate Jira / PR. Also, is the 3-arg fromJavaRDD(rdd, keyClass, valueClass) is used by tests? Maybe it is not needed for the key-only guard. We could possibly clean up extra public API - dropping it would keep the surface smaller.
