Review Comment:
**[86] A subclass that adds the capability back and calls
`super.createTable(ident, info)` still loses the request without an error.**
The `V2SessionCatalog` override from point 71 is reached only when an
extension forwards the `TableInfo` itself, as `ForwardingSessionCatalog` does
(CreateTableWriteOrderSuite.scala:1425-1426). This class has no
`createTable(Identifier, TableInfo)`, so `super.createTable(ident, info)` in a
subclass binds to the default at TableCatalog.java:382-385, which calls the
`Column[]` overload, and L119-126 pass that to the built-in session catalog's
`Column[]` overload (V2SessionCatalog.scala:271-277), which drops the layout.
This is the path I named in point 71 for a subclass that adds the capability
back. The class Javadoc at L34-35 still suggests it, "override {@code
createTable}, do something else before calling {@code super.createTable}",
while L60-64 and TableCatalogCapability.java:132-137 only document the
obligation.
For example, with a subclass that adds the capability in `capabilities()`
and, for a provider that is not its own, returns `super.createTable(ident,
info)` from `createTable(Identifier, TableInfo)`, `CREATE TABLE
spark_catalog.default.t (id INT) USING <a Python data source> ORDERED BY id`
passes the check at DataSourceV2Strategy.scala:264-265 and creates the table
without the ordering.
Could this class override `createTable(Identifier, TableInfo)` to reject a
requested layout with `UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE.TABLE_OPERATION`, and otherwise call
`createTable(ident, info.columns(), info.partitions(), info.properties())` as
the default does? Checking whether a layout is requested, rather than
`capabilities()`, makes it fire for exactly the subclass that adds the
capability back, and calling the `Column[]` overload on `this` keeps the
column-based overrides from point 28 in the path. A subclass that does not add
the capability back never receives a request, so nothing changes for it. If you
prefer to keep this in the docs, could L34-35 at least say that such a
`super.createTable` call drops a requested layout?

Review Comment:
**[85] Catching `StackOverflowError` in this per-node guard turns a key
deeper than the stack into a hang.**
ac75f63 changed this guard from `Try`, which lets a `StackOverflowError`
through, to `attempt` (L48-53), which catches it. The fallback runs outside the
guard and renders the same children again: `childrenToSQL` (L251) goes through
`toSQL`, which renders an `ExpressionWithToString` child with a new
`DescribingSQLBuilder` (L242), after `super.build` has already rendered them
through this method. When a key is deeper than the stack, both paths overflow
at every level, so each level repeats its whole subtree, the renders grow
exponentially with the number of levels on the stack, and nothing checks for an
interrupt.
For example, if a connector's `Table.writeOrdering()` returns a sort on
`GeneralScalarExpression("ABS", ...)` nested deeper than the driver's thread
stack, or on a `GeneralScalarExpression` whose `children()` array contains
itself, DESCRIBE TABLE EXTENDED never returns and keeps a driver thread busy,
and so does SHOW CREATE TABLE in a catalog that reports the capability
(L136-138). At 23c9799 this line was `Try(super.build(expr)).getOrElse(...)`,
so both commands failed at once with the `StackOverflowError`. Now they never
finish, which is worse than the failure the comment at L44-47 means to avoid.
The two tests that throw a `StackOverflowError`
(WriteDistributionAndOrderingUtilsSuite.scala:298-309 and 315-326) throw it
from a top-level key and from the replay function, where `describeSortOrder`
and `writeClausesSQL` catch it once, so neither reaches this guard.
The same doubling applies to an ordinary exception since 0032ea48c85 moved
the fallback into this method: a leaf that fails in both paths, such as the
suite's `UnrenderableTransform`, under k nested `ABS` calls has its
`arguments()` called 3 * 2^(k-1) times. That needs an unusual key, so it
matters less.
Could this guard catch only `NonFatal`, plus `LinkageError` if you want to
keep it, and leave `StackOverflowError` to the entry points at L107, L136, L154
and L168? Such a key would then unwind once, and DESCRIBE would print the class
of the key through `describeUnrenderable`. Rendering each child once, e.g. by
reusing the strings that the failed attempt already produced, would also remove
the doubling for ordinary exceptions. A test with a `GeneralScalarExpression`
that contains itself, under `failAfter`, would pin it.

Review Comment:
**[88] Correction to my point 75: the provider lookup still runs for clauses
that parse but do not replay as the same pair.**
With my suggestion in point 75, the check sits in the `replay` function, and
`writeClausesSQL` calls `replay` before it compares the pair
(WriteDistributionAndOrdering.scala:153-157). So `createsV1Table` runs
`DataSource.lookupDataSourceV2`, with its `ServiceLoader` scan and a provider
instance, also for clauses that parse and are then rejected, e.g. a key on a
column the table does not have, or a key with a `TRUE` argument, which comes
back as a column reference. For a v1 provider, the filter also turns the first
rendering into `None`, so `find` renders and parses the fully quoted one only
to drop it the same way.
Could `replay` be
`WriteDistributionAndOrdering.replayWith(session.sessionState.sqlParser)` and
the check apply to the result instead, e.g. `writeClausesSQL(...).filter(_ =>
!createsV1Table(resolvedTable.catalog, provider))`? The output stays the same,
since the answer does not depend on the clauses, and the lookup then runs once
and only for clauses that are emitted. The counting test at
CreateTableWriteOrderSuite.scala:791-802 could add a table whose clauses parse
but do not replay, and the comment at L175-176 would say "only for clauses that
are emitted".

+
+ Requests that writes to the table be clustered by the table's

+ of each partition are written by as few tasks as possible rather than by
every task that holds
+ rows for it.
+
+ Requires the table to actually be partitioned, with `PARTITIONED BY` or
with
+ `CLUSTERED BY ... INTO ... BUCKETS`. Note that `CLUSTER BY` -- a different
clause from
+ `CLUSTERED BY ... INTO ... BUCKETS` -- does **not** qualify: it lists
clustering columns for the
+ data source to interpret rather than defining a partitioning, and it
cannot be combined with
+ `PARTITIONED BY` or `CLUSTERED BY ... INTO ... BUCKETS`, so a table using
it has no partitioning
+ to distribute by. To distribute such a table by partition, replace
`CLUSTER BY` with one of
+ those clauses. A `cluster_by(...)` transform in `PARTITIONED BY` is
clustering too, so it does
+ not qualify either.
+
+ A statement that defines no schema (no column list, no typed partition

+ `AS SELECT`) cannot declare partitioning, so it cannot use this clause
either.
+
+* **ORDERED BY**
+
+ Requests a sort order for writes to the table, recorded on the table as
the default for later
+ writes. `UNORDERED` asks for no ordering at all, which is different from
omitting the
+ clause -- omitting it leaves the choice to the catalog. The parentheses
are optional:
+ `ORDERED BY (a, b)` and `ORDERED BY a, b` are the same. The sort keys must
resolve against the
+ table's columns, so a statement that defines no schema (no column list, no
typed partition
+ columns, and no `AS SELECT`) cannot use `ORDERED BY` or `LOCALLY ORDERED
BY`. `UNORDERED` needs
+ no schema.
+
+ The distribution decides how far the order reaches, and this clause picks
one when
+ `DISTRIBUTED BY PARTITION` is absent: a bare `ORDERED BY` asks for each
write to be
+ range-partitioned, so that the order holds across the tasks of a write,
not only within one,
+ while `LOCALLY ORDERED BY` asks for it to hold within each write task
only, without a shuffle.
+ `UNORDERED` on its own asks for no distribution either.
+
+ When `DISTRIBUTED BY PARTITION` is given it decides the distribution
instead, and the order then
+ holds within each write task. `LOCALLY` therefore adds nothing beside it,
and `UNORDERED` beside
+ it contributes only "no sort keys":
+
+ ```sql
+ -- range-partition each write by id, so the order holds across that
write's tasks
+ CREATE TABLE t (id INT, c STRING) USING iceberg PARTITIONED BY (c) ORDERED
BY (id);
+
+ -- cluster each write by partition instead, and sort by id within each task
+ CREATE TABLE t (id INT, c STRING) USING iceberg PARTITIONED BY (c)
+ DISTRIBUTED BY PARTITION ORDERED BY (id);
+
+ -- cluster each write by partition, with no sort order; UNORDERED here is
the same as
+ -- omitting it, since DISTRIBUTED BY PARTITION already fixed the
distribution
+ CREATE TABLE t (id INT, c STRING) USING iceberg PARTITIONED BY (c)
+ DISTRIBUTED BY PARTITION UNORDERED;
+ ```
+
+ Both clauses are passed to the catalog, which has to support them. If the
catalog does not
+ advertise support for a write distribution and ordering, Spark rejects the
statement rather
+ than creating a table that silently lacks the requested layout. The
built-in catalogs do not
+ support them. In the session catalog, Spark also rejects the clauses when
the statement would
+ create a v1 table, for example with a file source such as `parquet` or
with `STORED AS`, even
+ if a catalog extension registered as `spark_catalog` advertises support.
`ORDERED BY`,
+ `LOCALLY ORDERED BY`, and `UNORDERED` may also be combined with `CLUSTER
BY`, subject to the catalog accepting the combination: Spark passes the
clustering

**[87] A null `writeOrdering()` array still makes DESCRIBE TABLE EXTENDED
and SHOW CREATE TABLE fail.**
ac75f63 made DESCRIBE print a null element as `null`, but a null array,
which the same Javadoc rules out, fails before that: `toImmutableArraySeq`
wraps a null array as null, and `isRequested` calls `nonEmpty` on it
(WriteDistributionAndOrdering.scala:65). So a Java connector that returns null
for "no ordering", as `writeDistributionMode()` does for no mode, gets a
`NullPointerException` from DESCRIBE TABLE EXTENDED on each such table. SHOW
CREATE TABLE fails the same way when the table also has no mode, even in a
catalog that does not report the capability, because `isRequested` is evaluated
before the capability check (ShowCreateTableExec.scala:157-159).
Could both commands read the ordering through one helper that maps a null
array to an empty one, and could SHOW CREATE TABLE check the capability first?
Otherwise, if a broken contract should fail as it does for `constraints()`
(L223), the null-element handling could go too, so that both cases behave alike.

+ * Their default implementations drop the request, so a catalog that reports
this capability must
+ * override each one it can be reached through. A {@link
StagingTableCatalog} needs all four,
+ * because a {@code CREATE TABLE} without {@code AS SELECT} is not staged
and arrives at
+ * {@code createTable}. For a {@link TransactionalCatalogPlugin}, a
+ * {@code CREATE TABLE ... AS SELECT} or {@code REPLACE TABLE ... AS SELECT}
that Spark runs in a
+ * transaction is checked against and created through
+ * {@link
org.apache.spark.sql.connector.catalog.transactions.Transaction#catalog()}, and
is
+ * staged only if that catalog is a {@link StagingTableCatalog}. Spark does
not run every such
+ * statement in a transaction, for example one that names its table with a
non-literal
+ * {@code IDENTIFIER} or one run by {@code EXECUTE IMMEDIATE}; the plugin
itself is then checked
+ * and called. The plugin and the catalog of its transaction should
+ * therefore report this capability alike, and each override the overloads
above that it can be
+ * reached through, including {@code stageCreate} for a staging plugin.
+ * <p>
+ * A catalog may reject a request it cannot honor from these overloads. A
catalog that is not a
+ * {@link StagingTableCatalog} sees a {@code REPLACE TABLE} or {@code CREATE
OR REPLACE TABLE}
+ * in {@code createTable} only after Spark has dropped the existing table,
so a catalog that has
+ * to reject a replacement without losing the table should implement
+ * {@link StagingTableCatalog}.
+ * <p>
+ * {@link DelegatingCatalogExtension} does not forward this capability from
its delegate, because
+ * it does not override {@code createTable(Identifier, TableInfo)}. A
subclass that overrides the
+ * {@link TableInfo} overloads may report it again.
+ * <p>
+ * The built-in session catalog does not support this capability. It rejects
a request passed to
+ * {@code createTable(Identifier, TableInfo)} with {@code
UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE.TABLE_OPERATION},
+ * but its other {@code createTable} overloads, which {@link
DelegatingCatalogExtension} calls,
+ * cannot carry the request and drop it without an error. A {@link
CatalogExtension} that reports
+ * this capability therefore has to reject the request itself for a table
that it passes to the
+ * built-in session catalog through those overloads. As above, it can do so
before a
+ * {@code REPLACE TABLE} drops the existing table only if it is a {@link
StagingTableCatalog}.
+ * <p>
+ * Without this capability, such a statement fails with
Review Comment:
**[89] For a catalog without the capability, an analysis error can come
before the error this sentence names.**
The capability is checked while planning, in `DataSourceV2Strategy`, so
`PreprocessTableCreation` and CheckAnalysis reject such a statement first. For
a catalog without the capability, `CREATE TABLE cat.t USING foo ORDERED BY id`
fails with `SPECIFY_WRITE_ORDERING_IS_NOT_ALLOWED`, whose message says to add a
column list (rules.scala:334-337), and after that the statement fails with
`UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE.TABLE_OPERATION`. Likewise, `ORDERED BY nope` gets
`WRITE_ORDERING_WITH_UNKNOWN_COLUMN` (CheckAnalysis.scala:1010-1018) first,
while in the session catalog `USING parquet` gets
`UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE.TABLE_OPERATION` right away from `ResolveSessionCatalog`.
"before anything is created or dropped" holds in all of these cases.
Could this say that such a statement is rejected before anything is created
or dropped, without naming the condition, or that it fails with
`UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE.TABLE_OPERATION` once it passes analysis?

Review Comment:
**[92] This override repeats the body of the default, and its error always
names CREATE TABLE.**
L283 is the body of the default at TableCatalog.java:382-385. This class
extends `TableCatalog` directly (L47-48), so it can call
`super.createTable(ident, tableInfo)` after the check, as
`BasicInMemoryTableCatalog` calls `super.loadTable`
(InMemoryTableCatalog.scala:149-155). A later change to the default, e.g. one
that passes on `constraints()`, would then reach the built-in session catalog
too. Also, an extension can forward a REPLACE TABLE, CTAS or RTAS to this
method, while the error always says `CREATE TABLE ... DISTRIBUTED BY/ORDERED
BY/UNORDERED`.
Nit: could this call `super.createTable(ident, tableInfo)`, and could the
operation be just `WriteDistributionAndOrdering.CLAUSES`, which fits all four
statements?

Review Comment:
**[91] This Scaladoc says three tables but lists four, and
`ForwardingSessionCatalog` now separates the classes below from it.**
ac75f63 added `unmoded` and `unparsable` here and in `tableExists` (L1358),
so the list has four tables. It also put `ForwardingSessionCatalog`
(L1416-1427), which extends `DelegatingCatalogExtension` directly, between
`CountingProviderSessionCatalog` and `NoProviderSessionCatalog`, so "The same,
for tables that report no provider." (L1429) now follows a class that is not a
`V1ProviderSessionCatalog`.
Nit: could this say four tables, and could `ForwardingSessionCatalog` move
below `NoProviderSessionCatalog`, as with point 81?
