Ok, I think I'm slowly getting down to the cause....
strictTypeChecking on
https://github.com/Parquet/parquet-mr/blob/master/parquet-column/src/main/java/parquet/io/ColumnIOFactory.java#L100
creates the exception
The relevant class for the job setup is ParquetTableScan (doExecute).
I'm not yet sure if this can be fixed on the job setup or on the receiver
side.
