I talked offline with @davies and think that the `python3`-only issue is
fine for now. Let me revisit this tomorrow to quickly confirm a detail or two,
then I think we should be able to merge this and begin fixing / implementing
warnings. If the python3 issue turns out to be an issue, then we'll deal with
it at that future point.
