I think the compatibility is okay, but two other quick questions:
1. Is it well defined which exception caused the task to fail? What if a
task fails N times with N different exceptions, which is present in the cause?
I think this should be documented clearly in the docs for the developer API.
2. Maybe @kayousterhout could look quickly at the DAG scheduler changes.
