thanks @markhamstra . Just one minor clarification -- in your last
paragraph, did you mean options (2) or (3)? I thought you were opposed to (4),
and it doesn't make a lot of sense in combination w/ (1).
In any case, I'm happy if we go forward w/ option (1) for now. @suyanNone
would you like to make this change? To help get this merged, I would suggest
you remove the other changes from this PR. I think they might be good changes,
but they seem like separate issues and its best we solve the most important one
here. We can address the other issues in another jira / pr.
